This is a private collection of photos that was recently discovered and purchased from an estate sale in New York in March 2010. These snapshots appear to have been from a personal collection of someone familiar with the area and knew the names of several families whose properties were destroyed in this historical event. The photographer's name is unknown but it is highly possible that this collection has never been published in the local media or in historical documents. Most photos are of the Crescent Beach area with a few along Water and North St. Use of these photos beyond this web site by permission only at photos@mattapoisett.org.
Mattapoisett celebrated its 150th anniversary incorporated as a New England town. It's rich history goes much further than it's incorporation date. A photo series taken by friends, family and myself documents the week long celebration.
