Barbara Hubbard

FALL RIVER — Barbara "Shorty" (Short) Hubbard, 72, of Mattapoisett, died November 3, 2010, at Charlton Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of James E. Hubbard, Jr., with whom she shared 50 years of marriage.

Born in Boston, the daughter of the late Herbert E. and Katherine (Connolly) Short, she was raised in Osterville and lived in Mattapoisett since 1961.

Mrs. Hubbard was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church.

She was a dedicated elementary school teacher for 34 years. Mrs. Hubbard was loved by all of her students. She taught at Center School in Mattapoisett for many years. Mrs. Hubbard also taught in the Wareham Public School District until she retired in 1996.

Mrs. Hubbard was a star basketball player at Barnstable High School and later played softball. She was an active member of Bridgewater State College class of 1960 Alumni Association.

Mrs. Hubbard enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Survivors include her husband; 2 sons, James Hubbard and his wife, Beth of Mattapoisett and Stephen Hubbard and his wife, Andrea of Royal Palm Beach, FL; a brother, Tom Short and his wife, Gail of Kennebunk, ME and Port Charlotte, FL; 2 grandchildren, Connor and Ryan; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was the sister of the late John Short and David Short.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 AM in St. Anthony's Church. Burial will follow in St. Anthony's Cemetery. Visiting hours Friday from 5-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home For Funerals, 50 County Rd., (Rt. 6) Mattapoisett.
