Great News for Emma Marie's!

From The Wanderer: An application for Emma Marie’s Grooming, care of business owner Johnelle Roderick, located at 19 County Road. The applicant sought a special permit to allow overnight boarding of cats and dogs, to include an outdoor run for dogs and a cat room to house no more than five cats. After hearing positive feedback regarding the applicant’s business practices, the board approved the project application.

Special Audio Feed for Irene

Local Amateur Radio Repeaters where you may hear local weather spotters reporting observations live into the National Weather Service. You may also hear casual conversations unrelated to the storm. At 8 PM nightly you will hear the local weather net here and probably discussion on the pending storm. The amateur radio activity may dominate the scanner during the early morning and late afternoon hours.

There are also several local Marine VHF-FM frequencies programmed where you may hear the fishing fleet heading back into safe harbor, rescues, and Coast Guard activities. Please use caution as some of the fishermen may use colorful language. All communications heard here is delayed about 30 seconds but is not editied. Listener discretion strongly advised!

Other related frequencies may be added during the storm. This feed is available for the Irene event and as long as we have power and internet connectivity.

Chef Howard Stubbs - The Right Stuff!

UPDATE: Chef Howard has moved to the corner of Rt. 58 and Rt. 28 near RF Morse. He is alive and well and filling the air with great smells of hot dogs, ribs and other great foods! Map to new location.

A month ago or so Betty read an article about Chef Howard in the Standard-Times and his not-so-typical hot dog cart. As we headed out to see a movie she wanted to give it a try since he was conveniently located off Cranberry Highway on the way to the cinemas in Wareham. As we rolled up to the vacant lot we saw a white cargo van surrounded by a couple of barrel smokers, a hot dog cart and coolers....plus a man in a chef hat that was doing the work of three men. We soon discovered that this was more than just a roadside hot dog cart! You could order anything from an all-beef hot dog to a full rack of baby-back or Louisiana-style ribs. Both smokers were loaded with ribs and other goodies producing an aroma you could smell for miles around. As we were in line one gentleman in front of us was ordering a rack of ribs to pick up later in the day for dinner, but admitted that grabbing a sweet sausage dog to have for lunch was part of the plan....he seemed to be a regular customer. Since we were headed to a movie, we wanted to eat something simple and light so we decided on the two dog special. Two all-beef dogs, bag of chips and a can of soda...all for five bucks! Only fifteen minutes from Mattapoisett, we will be back to try his ribs and other delicacies. You'll also enjoy talking to the Chef.... inspirational and full of energy and enthusiasm. After a long court battle between Dunkin Donuts and the Mattapoisett Land Trust, we now have a drive-thru at the old A&P/Salvation Army (now Tedeschi's) site. New Online Scanner Updates

The police scanner at Mattapoisett.Org has been recently upgraded with a new PRO-197 Digital Trunk Tracker. It has been expanded to include additional local and state agencies as well as the new Dartmouth digital system. See Southcoast Scan.

Season of Remembrance

Betty Bauer Smith and Gail Bauer Nicholson (both of Mattapoisett) volunteer at the Dartmouth Mall recently raising funds on behalf of Community Nurse and Hospice Care. Stop by any evening thru the holidays. A $5 donation will buy a gift that you can sign in memory of a loved one and placed on the tree at the mall.

Barbara Hubbard

FALL RIVER — Barbara "Shorty" (Short) Hubbard, 72, of Mattapoisett, died November 3, 2010, at Charlton Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of James E. Hubbard, Jr., with whom she shared 50 years of marriage.

Born in Boston, the daughter of the late Herbert E. and Katherine (Connolly) Short, she was raised in Osterville and lived in Mattapoisett since 1961.

Mrs. Hubbard was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church.

She was a dedicated elementary school teacher for 34 years. Mrs. Hubbard was loved by all of her students. She taught at Center School in Mattapoisett for many years. Mrs. Hubbard also taught in the Wareham Public School District until she retired in 1996.

Mrs. Hubbard was a star basketball player at Barnstable High School and later played softball. She was an active member of Bridgewater State College class of 1960 Alumni Association.

Mrs. Hubbard enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Survivors include her husband; 2 sons, James Hubbard and his wife, Beth of Mattapoisett and Stephen Hubbard and his wife, Andrea of Royal Palm Beach, FL; a brother, Tom Short and his wife, Gail of Kennebunk, ME and Port Charlotte, FL; 2 grandchildren, Connor and Ryan; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was the sister of the late John Short and David Short.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 AM in St. Anthony's Church. Burial will follow in St. Anthony's Cemetery. Visiting hours Friday from 5-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home For Funerals, 50 County Rd., (Rt. 6) Mattapoisett.
